Packaging giant Smurfit Kappa has announced that it will 'vigorously appeal' the decision of the Italian Competition Authority to levy a fine of €124 million on its Italian business.
The company said it was 'very disappointed' with the decision on many levels and it would appeal on both administrative and substantive grounds.
It also said that the process is likely to take several years.
The Investigation
A probe, initiated in 2017 by the Italian Competition Authority against 50 companies, claimed that Smurfit Kappa Italia is one of a myriad of firms that engaged in anti-competitive practices.
The packaging group has reiterated its commitment to adhere to the highest standards of conduct in its business, and added that it would not tolerate any action that is inconsistent with its values.
