Spar Hungary has rolled out sustainable packaging solutions across all stores in the country following a successful pilot phase.
The initiative, which was launched last year, aims to reduce the use of plastic by encouraging consumers to opt for reusable bags for fruit & vegetables and bakery products.
The pilot project also tested multi-use silicone lids for certain store-brand dairy products and sandwich spreads.
These reusable and easy-to-clean covers help in preserving the quality of opened products, the retailer said.
'Eco-Conscious Shopping'
Márk Maczelka, head of communications at Spar Hungary, "These alternative solutions provide another great opportunity for a more eco-conscious shopping experience to our customers.
"Committed to protecting the environment, Spar Hungary monitors customer requirements. The development of our sustainability policy always considers these [requirements]."
Spar’s reusable packaging solution for fruit and vegetables contains three bags which can be used in two different ways.
The first option allows customers to weigh the products without the bag at self-service scales and then place it in the eco-friendly bag with the price tag.
At regular checkout counters, customers need to empty the bags to determine the weight and price of the products.
Reusable bags for baked goods are available in two sizes, Spar added, with larger ones for loaves of bread and the smaller ones for rolls, croissants, and other smaller bakery products.
