Tennent's To Remove Over 100m Plastic Rings From Packaging

C&C Group's Scottish subsidiary Tennent's will remove more than 100 million plastic rings, equivalent to around 150 tonnes of plastic, from its operations as it switches to cardboard packaging.

The move is part of Tennent's 'Because Life is Bigger than Beer' initiative, which aims at forging a more sustainable way to conduct business.

The transition to cardboard packaging will be complete by 2022, the company added.

Tennent's Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow will produce up to 120,000 cans per hour, packaged in fully recyclable cardboard.

'Sustainability'

Martin Doogan, group engineering manager at C&C Group plc, Tennent's parent company, said that sustainability "is at the core of our business and we will always look for ways to innovate and minimise our impact on the environment to play our part in tackling the climate crisis."

He added that the switch to cardboard packaging is a huge part of its 2022 goal of "eliminating single-use plastic" from its consumer packaging.

Wellpark is the only brewery with a membership of the UK Plastics Pact, and the facility aims to eliminate carbon emissions as well as removing plastic from its products.

Circular Economy

Scotland's cabinet secretary for environment, climate change and land reform, Roseanna Cunningham, said that she is pleased with the commitment to remove plastic packaging.

"By taking action which supports the environment, such as switching from single-use plastics and taking steps to become carbon neutral, businesses can help build a more circular economy," she added.
