Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) has announced that its brands Honest, Glacéau Smartwater and Chaudfontaine will switch to packaging made of 100% recycled plastic in Europe.
The technical and supply chain director of Coca-Cola Western Europe, Bruno van Gompel, said, “From 2020, wherever you buy these brands in our Western European markets, you will find them in a bottle that is entirely made from recycled plastic.
“This is a clear signal of our ambition – we aim to meet and exceed our target of using 50% rPET across our total portfolio by 2025,” van Gompel added.
The move will reduce the use of 9,000 tonnes of virgin plastic per year across Western Europe.
Sustainable Brands
Van Gompel also said that Honest and Glacéau Smartwater are relatively new to the European market, and Coca-Cola’s growth plan involves building the product portfolios of these brands on the continent sustainably.
CCEP will also replace Sprite’s green PET bottles with clear PET, for easier recycling.
Commenting on the move, the chief supply chain officer at Coca-Cola European Partners, Ron Lewis, said, “We know people have high expectations of companies to make the products that they love in a sustainable way, and we’re committed to meeting those expectations.”
In November of last year, CCEP partnered with Loop Industries to purchase 100% recycled PET plastic, to accelerate the use of recycled materials in product packaging.
