Waitrose To Introduce Recyclable Sandwich Wrappers

UK retailer Waitrose is introducing new packaging for its own-brand sandwich range that will be easier to recycle than it is currently. The packaging will primarily be made from cardboard, which can be easily separated from the plastic film that covers the food.

The move is part of Waitrose's plan to have widely recyclable/reusable private-label packaging across all of its food categories by 2025.

Sustainable Solution

Waitrose says that this new packaging, which is set to be introduced in August, will make recycling easier for customers and waste processors.

"The change to our sandwich packaging may seem like a small one, but it’s likely to make a big impact on the amount of packaging recycled," said Karen Graley, Waitrose's packaging manager.

"We continue to work on a solution to the pack’s plastic film in the hope that, in the future, none of the sandwich pack will go to landfill. Our ambition for 100% of our own-label packaging being widely recyclable, reusable or home compostable by 2025 is set to make a tangible difference to the environment."
