The first supermarket to combat food waste while helping consumers save money has launched online in Portugal.
GoodAfter.com, which is also has a Spanish market equivalent, sells food and non-food products which are near the end date of preferential consumption.
The products sold on the website range from food products such as canned and preserved foods, to non-food products such as shampoos, conditioners and cleaning products. Goods can be purchased with savings of up to 70 per cent compared to prices in traditional grocery stores (online and offline).
The online supermarket ensures that the products fulfill all the food safety rules and can therefore be marketed at lower prices.
For continental Portugal, deliveries are made within 24 hours and for Spain within 48 hours.
Besides fighting food waste, the initiative also aims to raise consumer awareness of the issue of validity of expiry dates, such as highlighting the fact that 'use by' and 'best before' dates are not the same thing.
