Portuguese Retail Sector Grows By 3.8% In First Half Of 2017

The Portuguese retail sector, including food and non-food products, registered an annual growth of 3.8% in the first half of 2017, reaching a sales volume of €8.96 billion.

This is according to data from the sales barometer of the Associação Portuguesa de Empresas de Distribuição (Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies).

The group reports that non-food retail increased by 4.5% in terms of volume during the first six months of the year. In this segment, telecommunications and large appliances were the categories that experienced that highest growth, increasing by 17.1% and 10.1%, respectively.

Food Retail

Meanwhile, food retail sales increased by 3.3% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2016. The product categories that performed best were beverages (+10%) and frozen (+5.4%).

There was also a growth of 0.5% in sales of private label products, which reached a 34% market share.
