Aldi UK bettered its supermarket rivals in a taste test of Christmas cakes with its £6.49 (1kg) private label Specially Selected Luxury Iced Fruit Cake, which received a perfect score for both taste and value, dailymail.co.uk reports.
The prominent food critic Joanne Gould gave the product 10 out of 10 for both value and taste, and nine out of 10 for texture (the three ways in which the desserts were assessed).
The counterparts of Lidl, Ocado and Asda respectively achieved comparatively disappointing scores, while Tesco’s Finest Two Tier Winter Enchantment Cake (£20, 1.9kg) was the second-best with a 10 out of 10 for flavour, eight out of 10 for value, and nine out of 10 for texture.
In these three categories Marks and Spencer’s private label Hand Decorated Falling Star Cake (£20, 1.56kg) scored 7, 6 and 9; and Sainsbury’s Golden Bow Iced Rich Fruit Cake 7, 6 and 6 (£18, 1.7kg).
