Auchan Retail Portugal is implementing the Nutri-Score nutritional labelling system on all its private-label products, according to reports.
The new label will be added to more than 2,000 products by the middle of next year.
The system helps consumers to make more informed decisions about their food by highlighting their nutritional value.
Nutri-Score labelling is already available for all own-brand products available on Auchan Portugal's online platform, and is gradually being added to all physical packaging of Auchan-branded products.
The Nutri-Score System
The Nutri-Score system classifies foods with letters A to E, where each letter corresponds to a colour – green, light green, yellow, orange and red.
The labelling scheme attributes positive points to contents such as fibre, protein, fruit, vegetables, and nuts.
'Negative' points are assigned to saturated fatty acids, sugars, salt, and calories.
Nutri-Score is the official labelling system in France and Belgium, although it is still optional.
Eight European consumer organisations have launched an online petition to request that the European Commission makes the scheme compulsory across Europe.
