Auchan France has committed to printing locations of origin on all its private label milk and meat products – a move which will affect 2,343 SKUs.
In a press release, Auchan says that the new packaging policy, which is to be fully implemented by the end of 2016, is a response to consumers’ "legitimate concern" regarding the origins of the foodstuffs they purchase. It applies to all its store formats – hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores and ecommerce.
It is also a response to the requests of farmers of various kinds across France, and an effort to cut down on food waste in supply chains.
All items sourced domestically will be clearly marked as such with an on-packet French flag.
Auchan says that it "will engage over the course of 2016 to transform the packaging of products sold under Auchan brands in order to systematically display the origin of the meat and milk it uses."
