Carrefour, in an effort to preserve fish stocks and to distribute fish caught responsibly and sustainably, has divided its private-label tuna into two separate products: those caught by fishing rods, and those caught by fishing trawlers, LSA reports.
At its Carrefour and Carrefour Market stores, there are now two products that use fish caught by fishing rods: canned skipjack tuna, and canned yellowfin tuna.
The retailer's trawler-caught counterparts are also still available.
Carrefour’s system reduces the harm done to sea life, such as that of dolphins, turtles, and tuna too young to be eaten.
It is in line with the company’s policy on biodiversity, which was developed in 2007. Since that time, Carrefour has doubled the availability of MSC-labelled products in its stores.
