Carrefour is growing its private label organic Bio in Spain by launching a range of new chocolates, made using a selection of cocoa beans harvested through ecologically-friendly methods.
Chocolate is one of the most popular sweets among consumers and the Spanish demand a high standard. In 2014, Spanish consumers purchased 163.6 million kilos of chocolate, according to Spanish website RevistaAral.com.
As its answer to this trend, Carrefour Bio will now include a wide range of chocolates, from dark and milk varieties, to chocolates featuring almonds, orange and hazelnut, as well as a special bar for baking.
In general, the consumption of organic products have grown in Europe during the last few years, but Spain has been an exception. In the country, the organic segment only represents about 1 per cent of total food expenditure for consumers, or about €21 per person a year.
