Italian food retailers are increasingly adding more organic products to their private-label offerings, as a response to new consumption trends and emerging consumer needs regarding healthy and free-from products.
Conad will launch a new private-label brand in 2016, dedicated to the organic, vegetarian/vegan, environmentally friendly and Fairtrade segments, which it hopes will boost its already strong presence in private label, where it is the leader in 45 per cent of the categories in which it competes.
In the period from January to November 2015, Conad’s private-label brand saw 11.1-per-cent growth (IRI data) and a turnover of €2.8 billion.
The retailer recently reviewed approximately 800 of its 2,949 products, divided between its range of private-label brands, as follows: Conad (2,101), Conad Percorso Qualità (500), Sapori & Dintorni Conad (245), Conad il Biologico (53) and Creazioni d’Italia (50), a brand reserved for foreign markets.
Meanwhile, Crai unveiled its new organic range, Crai Bio, last week, as well as additions to its private labels Piaceri Italiani, Crai and Crai Ecolabel (home cleaning).
Meanwhile, Auchan Italia will add new products to its Biologico, Senza Glutine, Sapori delle Regioni and Passioni private-label lines. In the fresh segment, Auchan Bio recently added red meat, which will be followed by a relaunched fruit and vegetable offer focused on local quality products. Auchan expects that its organic lines will include 200 products this year.
This comes after Auchan saw 3-per-cent growth in its private-label brands in 2015.
