Hypermarket chain Continente has teamed up with researchers, grain and flour producers and bakers to launch a 100% Portuguese bread.
The 500 gr. Continente Alentejo Cereal Bread is the result of the recovery of Portuguese wheat varieties and was produced from the best cereals harvested this year in the Alentejo region.
It will be available exclusively in the Continente stores, with a suggested retail price of €1.50.
The process of development of this product involved the National Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Research, the Quality Cereals Producers’ Club, Gérmen Moagens de Cereais, and the Marques Filipe Bakery, member of the Continente Producers’ Club.
This is the first of several initiatives that the Continente Producers’ Club intends to develop to encourage cereal production in Portugal, which has suffered a sharp drop in the last decades, due to the disinvestment in agriculture after the entry of the country in the EU.
