Coop Switzerland has introduced an organic version of its fair trade La Mocca coffee capsules into its organic Naturaplan range.
The capsules are the first to be certified by the Swiss organic organisation Bio Suisse. The brand was already certified by the fair trade group Max Havelaar.
The capsules come in four different flavours and fit into all Nespresso coffee machines. There are two types of capsules; one for espresso-sized coffees and one for larger lungo-sized servings. A 10-pack of capsules is priced at CHF4.20 (approximately €3.60).
South American Sustainability
The coffee is sourced from small farms in the highlands of Chiapas in Mexico and Peru.
According to the retailer, farmers in the region have joined forces to form cooperatives and work together to promote biodiversity.
The farmers pool their income into sustainable investments in their environment, Coop said in a statement. For example, they set up their own kindergarten for their children with the help of Coop’s fair trade price premiums.
In June, the Swiss company was named the world’s most committed retailer in the area of sustainable development, beating 147 other global retailers, in a study by German research group Oekom.
