Despar Relaunches Private Label Canned Tuna Line

Italian retail consortium Despar has relaunched its private label canned tuna line, improving the quality of the product while also adopting a sustainable approach.

This comes after the company obtained two important certifications for its canned tuna – 'Friend of the Sea' and 'Dolphin Safe'.

Sustainable Sourcing

Two canned tuna varieties are available - yellowfin and skipjack – with which the consortium aims to limit the impact on each species and to use only adult tuna sourced from non-overfished FAO areas.

The retailer says that it 'guarantees' the traceability of the product from the fishing vessel to the packaging and only uses suppliers capable of ensuring low environmental impact fishing methods that meet certain standards of sustainability criteria.

The Despar consortium encompasses six member companies that operate the Despar, Eurospar and Interspar store banners in Italy.
