Discounters Trump 'Big Four' in Own-Brand Taste Tests

Discount retailers Aldi and Lidl are outranking their big name competitors in terms of own-brand quality, according to the annual Own Label Food & Drink Awards, organised by The Grocer magazine in the UK.

A survey of 1,103 own-label products found that the most popular products from Aldi included its Specially Selected Vine Tomato & Lentil Soup, its Specially Selected Lemon Shortbread Rounds, and its Specially Selected Continental Plum Crumble Tart.

Lidl favorites included its Deluxe Irish Jalapeno Pepper Relish, Deluxe Scottish Hot Smoked Salmon Slices and its Deluxe Marinated Duck Breast Fillets Garlic & Pepper. Both discounters took 13 gold medals each in the awards.

Tesco won 12 Gold awards, for products including its Tesco Finest Hand Crimped Pork Pie with Red Onion Chutney, Tesco Finest Reserve Swiss Gruyere & Sauvignon Blanc Bake and the Tesco Finest Sicilian Lemon Coconut Ice.

Sainsbury's didn't revive any medals for its products, however, while Morrisons received just one. Iceland was awarded two medals, while Marks and Spencer also proved popular, scoring eight golds. Waitrose chose not to enter any products in the survey.
