Spanish retailer El Corte Inglés has committed to making its private label eggs cage-free by 2025.
The retailer announced the commitment as part of its sustainability plan, which is currently under development, and is set to include an animal welfare policy.
Currently, over half (53%) of the eggs the retailer sells are either organic or free-range, which places it well above the market average, according to El Corte Inglés.
Sustainable Restaurants
The retailer also signed an agreement with the Galician cooperative Coren to ensure that all of the eggs offered in its cafeterias, restaurants and prepared dishes will be free-range.
El Corte Inglés said it is committed to sustainable agriculture products and organic livestock systems.
In March of this year, the retailer reinforced its commitment to organic products by creating La Biosfera, a new business unit focused on ecological, bio and organic products, as well as a new private-label brand.
