Spanish retailer El Corte Inglés is offering deals on its gluten-free product range to celebrate National Coeliac Day, which takes place on 27 May.
In the last year the number of gluten-free products sold in El Corte Inglés has grown by 17%, while Hipercor experienced an increase of 23%.
The retail group has a wide range of gluten-free products in its own brand Special Line, which includes noodles, cereals, baked goods, and pizzas.
National Growth
ASEDAS, the Spanish association that represents distributors and supermarkets, has said that up to 1,000 gluten-free products are now available in Spanish stores.
The association says that this figure has continued to increase in the last decade, with a rise in both branded products and private label ranges that are suitable for coeliacs.
The greater supply of these products has been made possible by further research into palatable gluten substitutes, and the lowering of production costs.
Driving Force
"Supermarkets have been driving some of the most important changes that have improved the lives of people with gluten intolerance," said Ignacio García-Margarzo, CEO of ASEDAS.
He added that this sign of retailers' "commitment to the consumer" includes introducing new food ranges and better labelling on products.
