Spanish supermarket chain Eroski has launched a new range of own-brand vegan products, as the retailer seeks to promote a healthier and more sustainable diet.
The Eroski Veggie organic food range incorporates the V-Vegan seal, internationally recognised as an indicator of vegan and vegetarian products and services.
According to the retailer, the launch of the new range responds to the changing food demands and tastes of consumers, and includes products aimed at those adhering to vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian diets.
The new private-label range consists of around 20 food and fresh products, some of which are also certified organic, in addition to four references that were already on the market. More products are to be added during the year, Eroski said.
Some of the vegetarian references also incorporate the EU's organic logo that certifies that the food is sourced from organic agriculture and livestock farming and that it strictly complies with the European requirements for the production and processing of organic food and for inspection, certification and labelling.
The Eroski Veggie food range has gone on sale in physical stores and via Eroski’s online supermarket channels.
An estimated 44% of Spanish consumers purchase vegetarian products and 7.8% of the population over the age of 18 living in Spain adheres to a vegetarian diet.
Planet-Score Initiative
Last year, Eroski implemented the Planet-Score initiative on its private-label ranges, to better inform consumers about its products’ carbon footprint.
“We are concerned to keep clients informed so they can make more responsible choices," Alexander Martínez Berriochoa, Eroski’s health and sustainability director, said at the time.
"Now, we are taking a step forward and complementing nutritional information with environmental data, which offers the customer all the necessary information for a healthy and sustainable purchase.”
