German retailer Kaufland has added burgers that contain buffalo worms to its assortment.
The burger patties are produced by the company Bold Foods and contain protein powder from buffalo worms as well as being comprised of one-third vegetables.
Sustainable Alternative
The insect burger is protein-rich and a sustainable alternative to beef burgers, because the worms consume little water and emit only small amounts of carbon dioxide.
Moreover, they provide nutrients like vitamin B, omega-3 fatty acids and roughage.
Younger German consumers in particular are looking for meat alternatives that grill well on the barbecue, Kaufland said.
"The burger we prepare on the grill these days has nothing to do with junk food anymore. Consumers are experimenting with high-quality ingredients and unusual spice blends", commented TV chef Alex Wahi.
This consumer behaviour gave Kaufland the idea of launching the insect burger.
