Italy’s Despar Earns Certification For Tuna Products

Italian retailer Despar has earned Friends of the Sea and Dolphin Safe certifications for its canned tuna products, which the company says is ‘a perfect fit’ in terms of its environmental commitments.

The certifications also promote transparency about the origins of the products in its own-brand tuna range, with the retailer confirming that ‘its tuna is caught sustainably, stating that only adult tuna are used, no dolphins were hurt or killed in the process, and the tuna is caught in accordance with FAO approved areas of fishing, which combats the effects of overfishing in certain areas.’

Traceability

The packaging also offers full traceability of the products, with information about the species of tuna used, where it comes from, and information on the type of boat used to catch the tuna also available.

The Despar consortium incorporates six member companies that operate the Despar, Eurospar and Interspar store banners in Italy.
