German retailer Kaufland has removed plastic lids from the coffee mugs of its private-label range, K-to-Go.
The plastic lids have been replaced with an aluminium cover with a drinking spout to avoid inconvenience.
Head of sustainability at Kaufland, Lavinia Kochanski, said the move will help in reducing around 44 tonnes of plastic waste annually.
Kochanski added that it was essential for the retail group to address the issue, as approximately 18% of the total plastic waste generated in Germany comprises 'to-go' cups.
