Spanish retailer Mercadona has extended its range of private-label wet toilet wipes, with a focus on environmental sustainability.
In collaboration with Ubesol, the supermarket's supplier of personal-hygiene products, Mercadona is introducing a line of biodegradable wipes made from 100% natural fibres, which disintegrate in water, just like conventional toilet paper.
Development
The packaging of this product also has sustainability in mind, with a system that ensures that only one wipe is dispensed at a time, and a flap that can be closed securely, to maintain freshness.
Mercadona has invested €700,000 in research, focusing on developing disposable fabrics that can be flushed, alongside dermatological testing.
The retailer posted an increase in turnover of 3.9% last year, which it credits to its strategy of innovation, promoting fresh produce, and introducing more efficient store models.
