UK retailer Morrisons has launched the ‘Volcanic Vindaloo’, which claims to be the hottest supermarket curry ever made in the country, featuring the Naga chilli.
The new limited-edition dish was created to celebrate National Curry Week, which started on 9 October.
According to the Scoville rating, which measures the heat of spicy foods, Naga chilli is 200 times hotter than Tabasco sauce, and some varieties have been used to develop tear gas grenades.
Morrisons says that the product is designed for curry lovers who find that the spice level in existing meals is too soft.
The retailer worked alongside expert curry chefs to create the ready meal, which is also topped with whole green chillies, roasted to intensify the heat.
Spice Warning
The 'Volcanic Vindaloo' packaging carries a warning notice as well as a six chilli rating. The supermarket has recommended that only people over the age of 16 can taste the dish.
“Curry fans have been telling us that they just don’t get the fiery heat the want from ordinary ready meal curries," said Sean Gill, Morrisons ready meals expert.
"So we decided to take up their challenge and create the hottest ready meal in the country – something with the extreme heat you get when you order a Vindaloo in your favourite restaurant. We’re looking forward to hearing what they think.”
The meal is available from 9 October in all Morrison’s stores, at a price of £1.50.
