UK retailer Marks & Spencer is capitalising on the surging demand for magnums of prosecco by offering M&S Conte Priuli Oro, TheDrinksBusiness.com reported on Monday.
The 1.5-litre M&S sparkling wine retails at £15 and carries a gold-coloured label. It is produced for the supermarket chain by Bosco Viticultori, which supplies prosecco to the UK, Scandinavia, the US, Canada and China.
Paolo Lasagni, a representative for the winemaker, told the publication that since M&S added the wine to its private-label portfolio, it has already sold out.
“They keep asking me for more stock, which was supposed to last them until March,” Lasagni added. “People are looking for something different and something to show off with.”
“Our magnum sales are up by 1,000%, and people are willing to pay more for magnums than [they are for] the equivalent price of two 75cl bottles. Prosecco is booming in the US, but has reached its peak in the UK. It had to happen eventually, as that level of growth wasn’t sustainable.”
