Private label sales in the cash and carry channel in Brazil grew by 13.5% year-on-year to R$487.2 million last year, up from R$429.2 million in 2017, new research from Nielsen has found.
Basic category items, such as sugar, milk, beans, toilet paper and rice constituted 44% of private-label revenue in this channel, the study found.
Commodities such as milk (+23%), coffee (+17%) and oil (+20%) saw growth also witnessed growth.
Roberto Butragueño, director of retail services at Nielsen, explained that consumers are increasingly opting for cash and carry because of the competitive option it offers.
Consumer spending on cash and carry grew by 3.6% last year, the study found.
