German retailer Real has added Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified canned tuna to its range of fish products sourced from sustainable production.
The new product, available under the TiP private label brand, also carries the 'Dolphin Safe' label.
Metro-owned Real is eager to have all its private label fish products certified with a sustainability standard by 2020, a goal that is supported by the MSC.
"With this important step, Real supports the long-term protection and preservation of tuna stocks worldwide," said Stefanie Kirse, head of the MSC in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
MSC Certification
The MSC logo ensures products are sourced from environmentally-friendly fisheries. Products that carry the logo have to fulfil several criteria: the fish population has to be in good condition, the marine environment has to be protected and the fishery management has to focus on sustainable sourcing measures.
As well as canned tuna, Real customers can also buy frozen fish and seafood specialities, salads, fish spreads and smoked fish products bearing the MSC label.
Furthermore, the company has had its fresh fish counters certified to MSC-certified traceability standards.
With this measure, Real said that it is making progress in achieving its aim of offering only sustainable products by 2030.
