REWE Group has said that it is committed to converting all its chocolate SKUs to fair trade products by the end of the year.
The Germany-based group said that the conversion process ‘will take place gradually until the end of 2018’, and that once completed, all chocolate products on sale at its REWE and Penny outlets will be sourced from fair trade farms.
A founding member of the ‘Sustainable Cocoa Forum’, REWE Group said that it has been ‘committed to the certified cultivation of cocoa for many years’.
Innovative Partner
"The REWE Group is a long-standing, reliable and innovative partner of fair trade,” commented Dieter Overath, CEO of TransFair eV (Fairtrade Germany).
“Be it coffee, tea, roses or confectionery, the Fairtrade assortment in the REWE and Penny markets is getting bigger and bigger. We are pleased that the REWE Group is further expanding its fair raw material purchasing and continues to rely on Fairtrade-sealed cocoa.”
REWE Group has been active in fair trade since 1993 and was the first retailer to bring fair trade coffee to German shelves, some 20 years ago.
“It is important to us, especially in the cocoa sector, to permanently contribute to the improvement of local living conditions and conserve natural resources," commented Dirk Heim, REWE Group department manager for organic and sustainable goods.
"The cooperation with Fairtrade enables us to source cocoa from responsible, fair and sustainable production as well as guarantee transparent certification of our products.”
