Spar Austria has launched a new range of organic biscuits in partnership with the Vienna-based start-up NUSSYY.
The product does not contain added sugar or palm oil, and it is made of organic ingredients, such as spelt flour and oatmeal, sourced from the Mühlviertel region.
The sweetness in the biscuits comes from natural ingredients like dates, figs, and dried apples.
The move is in line with the retailer’s objective to reduce the sugar content of its own-brand products by 1,000 tonnes by 2020.
The biscuits are available in two flavours – Orange-spelt and Apple-spelt – in Spar, Eurospar and Interspar stores around the country.
Sugar Reduction Initiative
NUSSYY is a member of Spar’s sugar reduction initiative, which was launched earlier this year, to remove excess sugar from products.
“We are very pleased that an innovative company like NUSSYY supports our sugar reduction initiative, and that, as a retailer, we can offer our customers the first biscuits without added sugar in the country,” said Spar Austria CEO Dr Gerhard Drexel.
Apart from being a healthy-snacking option, proceeds from the sales of the biscuits support the EAT.CARE.LOVE project of the Jane Goodall Institute in Austria, which promotes awareness of the responsible use of resources.
Drexel added, “Sustainability has been firmly anchored in our corporate philosophy for 65 years, and this is reflected in our cooperation with NUSSYY and the Jane Goodall Institute.”
