Debbie Robinson, managing director of Spar UK, has suggested that the retailer could consider introducing a range of own-brand insects in the future.
Speaking at the Appleby Westward trade show in the UK, Robinson said, "The need for cheap protein will almost certainly be fulfilled by the consumption of insects," reports Convenience Store News.
When questioned as to whether Spar could consider stocking said foods, Robinson added, "Others do it, so there's no reason why we can't."
Robinson also said that Spar UK was seeking to raise its own-brand sales by 10 per cent to 40 per cent over the next five years, adding that the retailer needed to ensure that Spar is "future-proof".
