Tesco is expanding its own-label prepared food offerings with the launch of a range of ready-prepared vegetable alternatives to pasta, mashed potato, rice, couscous, pizza bases and bread.
Included in the new Tesco private-label prepared vegetable range, which has just been made available in the UK, are carrot spaghetti, courgette ribbons and cauliflower couscous.
As well as appealing to those looking to cut down on their carb intake, the new own-label range should also be of interest to shoppers following a gluten-free diet.
The carrot spaghetti and courgette ribbons are an alternative to pasta dishes, while the cauliflower couscous can be used as an alternative to rice and even mashed potato, according to the supermarket.
Speaking on the new product launch, Emma Bonny, prepared vegetable buyer for Tesco, said, “Creating vegetable substitutes for carbs, such as potatoes, rice and pasta, is really growing in popularity right now, and not just for the diet-conscious."
She pointed out how recipes from adventurous chefs can now be found on foodie websites, having "spiralised and mashed" their non-carb vegetables, or created cauliflower breadsticks and other bread alternatives.
"It’s easy if you’ve got a decent food processor and spiraliser, but not everybody has, so we think these new ready-prepared fresh vegetable packs will provide shoppers with a simple option for lowering their carb intake," she said.
