Tesco took more awards than any other retailer at the PLMA Salute to Excellence Awards, which took place earlier this week at the PLMA World of Private Label event in Amsterdam.
The UK retailer scooped six awards, for its Gazpacho Soup (Appetizers & Hors d’oeuvre; Tesco Poland), Kids Strawberry Yoghurt with Sponge Cereal Topping (Children’s Food; Tesco Slovakia), Tesco Strawberry Mineral Water (Infused Water; Tesco Czech Republic), Tesco Rolled Tortilla Chips (Salty Snacks; Tesco Czech Republic), Tesco Expert – Stain Remover, Fats, Oils and Grease (Laundry Care; Tesco UK) and Pro Formula Satin – Wild Berry Shave Gel (Toiletries; Tesco UK) products.
The winners in the PLMA Salute To Excellence Awards were selected by an international panel of industry experts, including chefs, former retailers, academics, nutritionists, journalists and packaging specialists. A total of 350 private-label brands were judged, from a total of 22 countries.
Also performing strongly at the awards was Irish retailer Dunnes Stores, which won four awards (in the Cereals & Muesli, Main Courses, Pasta Sauces and Sugar Confectionery categories).
Germany's Penny Markt won three awards, in the Breakfast, Desserts and Pizza categories, as did Switzerland's Migros, in Baby Care, Eye Care & Accessories, and Hair Care.
“The innovation at this year’s International Salute to Excellence Awards was really impressive – it reflects a long-term trend,” said Brian Sharoff, President of PLMA. "Private label no longer relies on me-too products for its appeal to consumers. Many retailers now have a very strong spirit of innovation, and this is displayed in the award-winning products.”
