Wegmans Lowers Sugar Content In Private-Label Foods

US supermarket chain Wegmans will decrease the sugar content of a number of its private-label foodstuffs.

Its nutrition and product-labelling manager, Jane Andrews, stated in a press release, "Our Wegmans Greek yoghurt already had less sugar than regular-flavoured yoghurts, but we are now adding less sugar than before in the organic varieties, and they still taste great."

The family-owned American grocer is also modifying the recipes of some of its private-label bottled sauces for the same purpose.

Furthermore, it will soon begin to bake patisserie goods of more modest sizes: mini croissants, mini cheesecakes and mini sweet rolls will all be available from its bakeries.

Andrews added, "Changing a recipe for baked goods can be tricky. There's a limit to how much you can cut down sugar without noticeably affecting taste and texture, so another route is to make serving sizes smaller. We now offer lots of petite pastries and bakery items, so customers can still enjoy one of their favourite treats, but in a smaller portion."
