One in five Portuguese shoppers have bought meals from supermarket and hypermarket food-to-go offerings, according to the TGI study by Marktest.
Over the past year, 19.4 per cent of residents in continental Portugal, or 1.66 million individuals, claim to have bought meals at a supermarket or hypermarket for later consumption.
In practice, this means that 24.9 per cent of those who purchase food and home care products in these retail formats also get food-to-go when they shop.
The Greater Porto area is the region where most consumers buy meals, whether they are sandwiches or re-heatable dinners, in grocery stores, with a greater preference for doing so among women (23 per cent) compared to men (15.4 per cent).
Individuals aged between 35 to 44 years and the higher social classes also show a higher probability of buying their meals in stores.
