In collaboration with the Dutch 'Nutrition Centre' (Voedingscentrum), Dutch retailer Albert Heijn has started a campaign to promote safe food-storing practice and help customers to waste less food. In addition to providing information and answering questions from customers, a special promotion has been launched, inviting customers to save tokens to collect airtight, waterproof food-storage containers.
A survey, carried out for Albert Heijn by 'Kien Onderzoek' found many respondents (aged 25 -65) uncertain about safe food-storing practice, mostly on the matter of how long (78%) and where (77%) fresh food should be stored, or cooked food kept - particularly where meat (53.8%), leftovers (44.2%) and vegetables (32.4%) were concerned.
"We find it important to give our customers a handle on how to store food safely and easily. The Nutrition Centre's advice, together with Albert Heijn's special fresh food storage boxes make it easier for everyone to save money and throw less food away. That's good for you and good for the world. Throwing food away is a crying shame", said Emma Coles - Manager of Health and Sustainability at Albert Heijn.
