Albert Heijn has opened an in-store Bakery Café and Deli Kitchen at its Albert Heijn XL Gelderlandplein branch in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The Cafe and Deli modules are designed to be easily customised, and the retailer intends to apply the format to many of its stores this year.
Marit van Egmond, commercial director at Albert Heijn, explained, "We are seeing that traditional eating patterns are changing, with people increasingly eating something in between meals, eating out, or while on the road. With the opening of the Bakery Café and the Deli Kitchen in Albert Heijn stores we are taking the next step in combining retail with food service."
The Bakery Cafe is located at the entrance of the store. Besides serving nine varieties of private-label Perla Excellent coffees, juices and smoothies, it offers a selection of sweet pastries, gourmet sandwiches and toasties, which can be made to order.
The Deli Kitchen offers a selection of pick ‘n mix salads, choose-your-topping pizzas, grilled chicken meals and gourmet dishes, such as beef curry or pumpkin caponata.
