Discounter Aldi has unveiled plans to launch an online store in China, operated through its Australian subsidiary, Aldi Stores.
Lebensmittel Zeitung reported that Aldi already has registered a domain name, www.aldi.cn, and is undertaking work on ensuring packaging and labelling meets Chinese market requirements.
The trade publication expects Aldi to offer a ‘local assortment’, as well as a number of products that are ‘Mde in Germanuy’.
China is to be the first market in which the German retailer has established an online presence without previously having a physical store in a market.
As Lebensmittel Zeitung quipped, ‘Meanwhile, all those who love the fine music of words can only regret that Aldi doesn't seem inclined to team up with Alibaba, for then we could have had a joint-venture with the name of Aldibaba.’
