Discounter Aldi told local Chinese media it will indeed enter the Chinese market, confirming earlier speculations, IGD has reported.
It could set up virtual shop in the country as soon as the first half of 2017, launching a transactional website that will offer 'a carefully selected range of everyday grocery items to Chinese consumers via an online retailing platform with products delivered to consumers' homes', a spokeswoman said.
She added that the retailer can satisfy Chinese demand for Australian products, as most supermarket goods and wine will come from Aldi's expanding operations in the continent.
This will be the first time that Aldi has launched online-first operations in a country. Later in the year, it plans to bring brick-and-mortar-stores to China.
