Shoppers at Aldi and Lidl will be supporting the Conservative party in this week's UK general election, according to the latest Consumer Sentiment Tracker from research agency GlobalData.
Although the two German discounters were Labour strongholds in 2010, they have seen a reversal in opinion in this election, with 40.5% and 44.6% of consumers in Aldi and Lidl planning to vote for the Conservatives, respectively.
GlobalData suggests that this shift has resulted from changing perceptions regarding the discounters, seeing 'a more affluent consumer opting to do weekly shops at these retailers'.
Political Trends
The poll reveals that Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's shoppers also favour the Conservative party, with Waitrose showing the strongest level of support, at 46.7%.
Green Party voters also seem to shop in Waitrose, which, GlobalData suggests, is due to the retailer's environmental and ethical policies.
Meanwhile, the majority of Asda and Morrisons shoppers support Labour, with 41.2% and 40.3%, respectively.
The Liberal Democrats are third in all supermarkets except Aldi, where UKIP pushes the party into fourth place.
Overall, however, far fewer shoppers say that they will vote for UKIP as they did in the 2015 survey.
The UK election will take place today, Thursday 8 June.
