Perhaps inspired by a recent survey undertaken by its rival Lidl, which found that many consumers find Christmas stressful, Germany's Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have jointly launched a Christmas TV commercial, advising us to stop stressing out and enjoy what really matters: the basics, in good company.
The ad opens to the sound of arguments, over poor time management - 'you haven’t got the kids’ presents yet?! '- or attention to detail - 'surely you know your mother is allergic to nuts?!' - representing the generally un-festive chaos, which many families experience in preparing for the holidays.
The 45-second ad ends with a young girl opening her window, saying, “Relax! - it’s Christmas” and wishing us ‘Frohe Einfachten’: Merry Back-to-Basics.
The TV spot, produced by Ogilvy, is part of a wider campaign that includes additional radio commercials for specific, Christmas-related Aldi products and advertising posters in Aldi outlets across Germany. It was first broadcast on 4 December, and will be shown on all TV channels in Germany, on Sky and on the Aldi YouTube channels.
