Aldi has announced plans to develop a new distribution centre in Hungary, as well as plans to open 50 to 60 stores in the country.
According to local newspaper Figyelő, which was quoted by Barclays European Food Retail Equity Research, the discounter plans to spend between HUF 50 billion and HUF 60 billion (between €164 million and €196 million) on its expansion in the country.
The discounters currently hold a market share of around 18% in Hungary, according to Barclays, adding that Aldi’s managing director believes that this could rise as high as 25% in the years to come, which would put the sector roughly on a par with that of the hypermarket industry.
