Aldi Portugal Partners With EDP For Electric Vehicle-Charging Network

Aldi Portugal has selected EDP Comercial to instal and operate over 650 fast-charging stations at its stores across mainland Portugal.

This marks one of the largest electric mobility partnerships ever undertaken in the country, and EDP’s most extensive project on the Iberian Peninsula, according to the discounter.

EDP Comercial will provide electric vehicle-charging solutions for all Aldi stores with parking in Portugal. This includes installing chargers at existing stores and new locations opening this year and next.

The company will also manage the existing 34 charging stations at Aldi stores. The partnership will add over 650 charging points to the MOBI.E public network, accessible to all drivers using CEME (Electricity Traders of Electric Mobility) cards.

The fast-charging equipment will range from 60kW to 120kW, allowing Aldi Portugal customers to choose their desired charging speed while shopping.

Sustainability Efforts

As part of the Aldi Nord Group, the retailer’s sustainability efforts focus on four key areas: climate protection, responsible supply chains, eco-friendly packaging, and food waste reduction.

In the realm of climate protection, Aldi Nord has set a goal of reducing emissions by 55% across the entire group by 2030.

As a leading investor in electric mobility in Portugal and through partnerships with companies, EDP Comercial has focused on expanding its public charging infrastructure in convenient locations that offer optimal charging experiences and power options for electric vehicle users.

EDP Comercial’s network of public charging points now exceeds 3,300, spread across 195 municipalities in Portugal.

João Braz Teixeira, general director of expansion and property with Aldi Portugal, commented, “We are very pleased with this partnership with EDP Comercial, which plays a vital role in the search for practical and efficient solutions in Portugal.

“Together, we chart the path to decarbonisation, offering our customers an increasingly sustainable in-store experience, raising awareness [about] – and promoting, at the same time – the use of electric vehicles in the country.
