Aldi is set to launch an online grocery service in the UK, according to reports in German trade publication Lebensmittel Zeitung.
According to the report, the discounter is set to use the UK as a trial market for an online service, ahead of a larger multichannel rollout in Europe.
Research company ResearchFarm commented that the UK is the 'ideal' market for a trial.
“For now this is only a trial," said Daniel Lucht, Research Director at ResearchFarm. "However should Aldi decide to really venture into online grocery retailing in future, perhaps with a dedicated click & collect offer, then this would have the potential to change the dynamics of the entire industry.”
“Once both Aldi and Lidl add the online channel to their overall proposition and tap into latent demand, all bets are off in terms of where their market share could go.”
