Aldi UK figures released yesterday (February 3) show that its caviar sales went up by 44 per cent during the four weeks to 2 January, DailyMail.co.uk reports.
The sales of the luxury seafood generated £167,500 over the Christmas period for the German grocer. Sales of whitebait went up by a massive 12,000 per cent to a sales value of £34,500 for the four weeks, while red snapper sales were up by 420 per cent for the period (sales value: £10,000), and sales of cuttlefish increased by 230 per cent to sales worth more than £3,000.
Sales of skate and ray combined brought in £122,000 for Aldi over the four weeks, up 160 per cent.
“It's great to see a wider variety of seafood making gains in the market,” said Julia Brooks, an analyst at the organisation Seafish. “As well as being an indicator of shifting consumer tastes, these findings also reflect an increased effort from retailers to expand their product ranges and bring undervalued, high quality species into the mainstream.”
