Italian discount grocery chain Ard Discount has opened its first store in Sardinia, in Oristano, in a joint venture with local retail group Fratelli Ibba.
The two partners plan to open nine more stores in Sardinia in the near future. These stores will be located in Santa Teresa di Gallura, Villa San Pietro, and other cities across the island, the company noted.
Leader Price
The move will also see Ard Discount replacing discount grocery chain Leader Price, operated as a joint venture between Crai and Geimex/Casino, which is closing its stores in Sardinia. This follows similar closures in Lombardy, which were announced in 2022.
The Sardinia opening marks the latest expansion for Ard Discount, which is already present in the Italian regions of Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, Abruzzo, and Basilicata.
Ard Discount
The new Ard Discount stores, like the rest of the network, will offer groceries, fresh and frozen foods, meat and seafood, fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as housewares and appliances.
Ard Discount is known for its focus on private-label products, which includes 33 brands (including Terre & Tesori, Buono & Gusto, TodaVida, and Sorsy), and more than 1700 SKUs.
Its product offering includes ranges dedicated to organic, high protein content, gluten and lactose-free, vegan, and local products with many DOP- and IGP-certified products.
Owned by Ardita, a joint venture between grocery retailers Ergon and Maiora, Ard Discount currently operates 232 outlets in Central and Southern Italy. Its network is supported by a 40,000 square metre distribution centre.
