Colruyt’s organic supermarket chain Bio-Planet has announced the launch of its first store in Verviers, in the province of Liège. It is also the retailer’s twenty-ninth Bio-Planet outlet in Belgium.
The new supermarket is located in a brand-new, 100% fossil fuel-free building, equipped with the latest eco-friendly technologies.
A launch party has been organised today, 27 November, between from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, to welcome the residents of Verviers to the new store. The store will officially open on Wednesday, 28 November.
Range Of Products
The supermarket, spread across 650 square metres, will offer around 6,000 organic, food and non-food products.
Customers will also have the option to choose from an extensive range of fresh meat, cheese, and vegetable products.
The items will be cut on the spot by Bio-Planet’s staff, and then prepared and packaged in convenient portions.
The new bio supermarket will also act as a collection point for Colruyt’s Collect & Go service for online shoppers.
Eco-Friendly Building
The building is heated with the residual heat from its environmentally friendly, propane cooling system.
“This technology reduces the store's greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90% compared to stores with a traditional heating installation”, explained Jo Ghilain, the business unit manager of Bio-Planet.
“The ventilation system also recovers 75% of the heat in the air. And an air curtain at the entrance keeps out the cold air.”
The building uses 100% green electricity supplied by Colruyt’s sustainable energy specialist, Eoly.
The implementation of LED lighting further cuts down energy consumption by 30%.
