Brazilian retailer and distribution group GPA reported net food sales of BRL 11.7 billion (€3.42 billion) in Q4 2016 (+12.1% year on year) and full-year sales of BRL 41.5 billion (€12.13 billion), up 11.4%.
Retail business unit Multivarejo posted a 1.9% growth in net total store sales, to BRL 7.48 billion, in Q4 2016 and 0.8% growth for 2016, to BRL 26.9 billion.
Same-store sales recovered, supported by improvement at Extra Hyper, which saw same-store sales growth of around 5%, compared to -2.5% in the first nine months of 2016.
The Multivarejo business includes the Extra and Pão de Açúcar banners – supermarket stores, hypermarkets, proximity stores, gas stations, drugstores and food e-commerce, as well as revenue from commercial-centre leasing. In the last 12 months, 30 new stores were opened, including 14 Minuto Pão de Açúcar, two Pão de Açúcar and one Minimercado Extra.
The expansion plan for 2017 includes the conversion of 15-20 Extra Hyper stores, strengthening the banner’s presence in both existing markets and new states. The Multivarejo unit will see the opening of five new Pão de Açúcar stores and ten Minuto Pão de Açúcar.
GPA, part of France’s Casino Group, operates more than 2,000 stores across 21 Brazilian states and the Federal District.
