A study by Verdict Retail on the voting intentions of UK shoppers in today's Brexit referendum has found that Sainsbury's shoppers are the most likely to vote to leave Europe, while Tesco customers are keen to remain.
In terms of the Big Four UK supermarkets, shoppers from Tesco (43.0 per cent) and Asda (39.9 per cent) are likely to vote to stay in Europe, while voting to leave is more popular among the shoppers of Sainsbury’s (41.1 per cent) and Morrisons (36.4 per cent).
Just over two fifths (41.1 per cent) of Sainsbury’s shoppers are planning to vote to leave the EU, the highest percentage of any major grocer and 4.3 percentage points higher than the national average of shoppers voting in favour of a Brexit. Morrisons has the highest share of undecided voters (22.0 per cent).
In terms of voter apathy, Lidl has the highest percentage of shoppers (12.6 per cent) who do not plan to vote in the referendum, followed by 9.9 per cent of Asda shoppers.
All findings are based on a nationally representative survey of 2,000 UK consumers completed w/c 13 June 2016.
