Research carried out in the UK by leading retailer Sainsbury's has found that 17% of every cooked Sunday roast ends up in the bin. This adds up to around two million full roast dinners wasted per month, despite 50% of respondents naming it as their favourite dish.
The study was completed as part of Sainsbury's 'Waste less, Save More' campaign, which was recently launched to raise awareness about the over two million tonnes of food wasted unnecessarily in the UK, every year.
The research found that most food waste occurs because people are unsure of how to store or re-use leftovers (24%), or don't think they have the right equipment to do so safely (50%). Leftover vegetables were found to be thrown away twice as often as leftover meats, by 27% and 13% of respondents respectively.
Paul Crewe, head of sustainability, energy, engineering and environment at Sainsbury’s, commented: "Respondents told us they wished they knew more about managing and cooking food at home, and we’re dedicated to helping them do so, which is why we recently launched our first nationwide advertising campaign to help shoppers waste less food and save more money."
